My pack is all ready to go, my hair is dark, and my mom is freaking out … I can’t wait. I get on the plane bright and early tomorrow morning in Marquette and will be arriving in Guatemala City later in the evening. After one night there I will take a four hour bus trip to Quetzaltenango, where I have been assigned to a host family.
Questzaltenango is the second largest city in Guatemala surrounded by hills and, yes, even volcanoes (don’t worry mom these ones are inactive). Over twenty languages spoken there so I am hoping that what I lack in Spanish I can make up for with my French and English? The 60-70 degree weather will be a nice treat after being in Marquette for a week. I am a bit nervous about being a vegetarian in Guatemala, when I went to Spain “no comer carne” didn’t get me very far, we’ll see 🙂
My itinerary includes full work days in the orphanage, Spanish lessons three times a week, and free time to explore the city. I am not sure how much internet access I will have, but I will try to write as much as possible. Hope you all enjoy the rest of your break … see you in a couple of weeks!!!
