Xela Day One

Since waiting in the bus station a lot has happened. On the way our bus broke down (typical I hear). By the time we had unloaded there was already three bus drivers bartering for our business. I got on a new bus we were on our way to Xela. There were many families that literally lived in the hill off of the ¨highway¨ as the bus passed by children would flock waving to us, at one point someone started throwing candy at them, they were adorable. Also at each stop sreet vendors would get on the bus walk up and down the aisles to sell their goods and exit at the next stop to catch a new bus. Smart salesmen if you ask me. Finally after 5 hours we got to Xela although since I had switched buses I ended up at the wrong station so I had to call the woman who was meeting me to come to the new location. A little bit of a mess but I survived.

In Xela Marlo and I went out for coca and rolls and discussed my itinerary. She then took me back to the school to show me around. After that my family met me and took me home. I have only met two members thus far but they are very nice. They had breakfast for me bright and early at 730 AM then I was on my way to the Orphage.

The orphage houses about 15 children and two victims of domestic violence. Every one is so friendly and patient with my inability to speak their language. The kids love to draw, canga, and are very well behaved. After meeting them I have finally found people who enjoy taking pictures more than myself, and we thought it wasn´t possible. Right now I am off to luch with my family and then off to Spanish class where I will do my best to progress rapidly!!!!!

Tomorrow I have a shift at the orphanage then some other volunteers and I are taking a three day hike to the lake. We will then meet up with another group who chose to take the bus and celebrate New Years Eve in San Pedro. Should be a good time … I will keep you updated!!!

Hope all is well in the states!
