| Just got done at the orphanage. The kids had class today so it was a pretty relaxing day. All of them are taught in a one classroom setting, I can´t imagine teaching the same material to 2-12 year olds!!! Nonetheless it is good that they have teachers available for them. I was speaking (or trying atleast) to one of the women in the center for domestic violence. She is only 18 years old!!! She has a son who also lives there he is about 3 years old. Domestic violence and womens rights is an ongoing issue here, for the most part they are still expected to work in the homes. Equal rights was a huge part of the political tension in the 90´s and as the civil war ended in 96 it was promised that womens rights would be reformed and enforced. However, as of now there are still many issues that remain unaddressed. While men are able to wear modern westernized clothing the majority of women still wear traditional mayan clothing. Men hiss at women, often stare excessively, and are not afraid to make in appropriate sexual comments. The younger generation seems to be more aware of equality but needless to say there is still a lot of progress to be made. Alrighty that is my soapbox for the day I will stop now 🙂
I have Spanish class at 2:00 and then we are going to Salsa classes at 6pm, I can´t wait!!! I am going with a girl who works at the language school I attend, she is from England but has been traveling for 21 months … 3 of them have been here in Xela. It is amazing how many people are here traveling!! I never expected to run into so many American and Europeans. Many come solely to learn Spanish, a couple I met today was working on organic farms, others volunteer through programs like me, and some are just here for the simplistic lifestyle. Well I am off to find some cold medicine and eat lunch!!! Wish me luck trying to explain a head cold at the pharmacy!! |
