Kaikoura

The drive from Christchurch to Kaikoura was beautiful. Imagine the scenery changes during the thirteen hour drive from San Francisco to Seattle. Driving from Christchurch to Kaikoura was very similar, except the landscape changes occurred in merely two and a half hours. There were sheep a plenty, the radio rarely worked and gas stations were accepting of barefoot patrons. I would call the first lag of our trip a success.

Kaikoura is a quaint little coastal town known for its surf, sea life and mountainous views. We walked around town and explored the beach a bit before sitting down at “The Whaler” for delicious seafood and a couple of dinner salads. I, of course, asked for a side of ranch with my salad, causing the waitress to look at me with confusion. When traveling, I always forget about how American that creamy delicious substance is. Alas, their vinaigrette was pretty amazing.

After a post dinner stroll and a couple domestic brews, we hit the hay early in order to wake for a true Kaikoura sunset. 5:20 AM, an hour I rarely see unless I am on my way home from a long night out. 5:20 AM was completely worth it today. Kaikoura is generally pretty cloudy in the morning, due to the nearby mountain ranges, which created quite a view. Words wouldn’t do it justice so I will just provide pictures.

Today we are staying on the East Coast to hike a nearby waterfall and then we are hitting the road again to find our next adventure as we make our way to Queenstown.
