Back to Denver: 417 miles

On the way back to Denver, we decided to take the scenic route. First stop, Taos for a hearty breakfast at Michael’s Kitchen Café and Bakery. I strayed from my traditional breakfast and decided on the huevos ranchero – sans queso, con aguacate. I’ll admit it, I was nervous, but they failed to disappoint. The free mug that we “scored” wasn’t all that bad either.

With satisfied stomachs and a full gas tank we were off. We didn’t have a plan, but I knew the road would guide us. From Colorado’s oldest town of San Luis to the Great Sand Dunes National Park it did just that. Our final stop, Evergreen, where we posted up at Cactus Jacks, a Widespread Panic bar nestled in the mountains. Immersed in an environment full of Michiganders and cold beer, I felt at home. It was the perfect way to end a weekend on the road.

This morning I said goodbye to my vehicle and my loyal road warrior – Jerry Rubin Hurricaine Carter. They’ll be waiting for me in Denver when I return. Until then I’ll call Angie’s Bonneville home. After shoving my suitcase in the last available crevasse we stocked up on kombucha and hit the road. Moab is on the horizon.

Day 10,217. On to phase two.
